With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, it can be easy to get out of your exercise routine. Every year I hear people making excuses and rationalize it as, “I’m busy, I have a ton of family and social obligations, I’ll get started in January, etc…” Here are 5 way for making exercise a priority during the holidays.
1 – Schedule it
The hardest part sometimes is just showing up. If you actually put on your calendar and block out the time you are much more likely to actually show up. Make yourself an appointment and treat it like any other appointment on your calendar.
2 – Tell a Friend
Once it’s in your calendar, next layer of accountability is to tell somebody. If you tell people your going to go workout, you give them authority to ask you about later. Not wanting to disappoint others can create to motivate to do what you say.
3 – Bring a Friend
You can schedule your workout, you can tell everyone your going to go, but it’s a lot harder to not show up if you are meeting up with a friend to workout. It’s easy to skip your workout when you are just let yourself down, but it’s much harder to skip if your are letting someone else down. Workout buddies are great because not only do they help be more accountable, but they will make the workout easier and more fun.
4 – Hire a Trainer
If the appointment on the calendar doesn’t work, if telling people doesn’t work, if you are making excuses to your friends then you need to find what actually motivates you. For a lot of us it’s money. Paying someone to train you will not only make your workouts more efficient, but you are more likely to show up if you know that you are wasting money if you don’t.
5 – Look in the Mirror
You can do the first four tips on the list, but ultimately it’s up to you. Nobody is going to make you show up, nobody is going to do the work for you. You have to look yourself in the mirror and make a decision to make exercise a priority not only during the holidays, but also throughout the year. “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me” – Brian Tracey
